Introvert is a personality trait that describes a person that prefers inner self. Introverts tend to thrive in solitude and exert energy in social interactions or certain external stimulation. This means that introverts can feel tired (even drained) after social situations and regain energy by means of solitary activities, like reading, gardening, cooking or meditating.
What is the opposite of introversion?
Extroversion is at the opposite end of introversion. It describes a person that gains fulfilment from their outside self. They tend to be more talkative and enthusiastic, and are energised by social interactions.
Can a person be both introvert and extrovert?
Personality specialists, particularly Carl Jung and researchers of the Myers Briggs personality indicator, suggests that the introversion-extroversion personality theory is a single continuum. An individual can have both introvert and extrovert characteristics, placing them anywhere in between the continuum.
More recent theories advise a third personality trait called ambivert. This describes those that fall around the halfway mark, and have balanced introvert and extrovert characteristics.
How do I know if I’m an introvert?
There are lots of personality quizzes out there that would help you identify if you’re an introvert. Here’s a short one, and if you’re interested in a deeper analysis of yourself, the Myers Briggs personality test is highly recommended.
You can also ask these questions to yourself. If you answer yes to all or most of these questions, you are likely to be an introvert.
Do you prefer spending time alone?
Do you feel tired after social situations?
Do you describe yourself as reflective or thoughtful?
Do you prefer to have a small, select group of friends?
Are you most productive when working by yourself?
So, are you an introvert?
